According to the IRS website, in recent years, thousands of people have lost millions of dollars and their personal information to tax scams and fake IRS communications. The scams often involve telephone calls from persons impersonating IRS agents, fraudulent email notifications and phishing and malware incidents. Please remember that the IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages or social media channels. The IRS also does not threaten taxpayers with lawsuits, imprisonment or other enforcement actions, and will notify you in writing if you have an unpaid tax liability prior to making telephone contact.
